With Maritime and Safety Training, getting your Coxswain licence has never been easier. Our training courses give you the opportunity to command and operate a vessel safely up to 12 metres in length in Australian inshore waters, operate inboard and outboard motors and comply with all health and safety regulations.
Other course units of competency include fire-fighting procedures, basic survival skills in case of vessel abandonment, and basic servicing and maintenance of main propulsion unit and auxiliary systems. Propulsion power will vary depending on which Coxswain Licence you achieve.
Difference between Coxswain Grade 1 & Grade 2 Course
Coxswain grade 1 course allows you to command and operate vessel less than 12 metres long with unlimited outboard engine propulsion, or inboard engines less than 500 kilowatts.
Whilst Coxswain grade 2 course allows you to command, and operate the engines of, a vessel less than 12 metres long with unlimited outboard engine propulsion, or inboard engines less than 100 kilowatts. Note well, if you have a Coxswain grade 2 near coastal certificate, you are not permitted to operate a vessel carrying passengers unless you are endorsed to do so.

For Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal, propulsion power is capped at 500KW for an inboard engine and is unlimited for an outboard engine.

For Coxswain Grade 2 Near Coastal, propulsion power is limited to 100KW for an inboard engine and unlimited for an outboard.
Getting Your Coxswain Licence
The Coxswain Certificate in Maritime Operations is split into two licences, Grade 1 and Grade 2.
Under the propulsion power limits mentioned above, Maritime and Safety Training’s Coxswain Licence courses will allow you to command and operate a vessel up to 12 metres in length along with a tender or auxiliary vessel within 3nm of a parent vessel in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) subject to designation. This allows you to get real-world experience in an environment that permits holders of Coxswain Licences to operate under certain conditions that may be imposed depending on the situation.
Once you have completed your chosen course you will be issued either with a Certificate I in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 2 Near Coastal) MAR10413, or a Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal) MAR20313.
